   Spring Cleaning

   Spring is here, the weather is warming up, if you haven’t already saddled up and gone for a ride, you have been thinking about it. It’s a great time for a spring tune-up of your horse and your gear. Now is a great time to deworm your horses and give them their annual vaccinations before they get to intermingling with other horses. This is also a great time to perform annual maintenance on your saddle and tack. First you should do a visual inspection looking for worn leather or hardware. Also you should look for dry and cracked leather. Now is the time to do repairs, before the accident happens. It is also important to give your saddle a complete cleaning and oiling. It is important to remember that leather is the skin of cattle. When the skin was on the cow it was nourished by the fats and oils of the body of the cow. Now that the skin has been turned into leather, it still needs to receive nourishment with fats and oils. When we replenish these fats and oils we increase the useable lifespan of the leather which is a practical way to get the most out of our investment, considering the cost of quality leather gear. Cleaning and oiling leather also maintains its strength which is important in maintaining safety. Taking some time to attend to spring time maintenance will result in safe and happy experiences with your horses.
